Big Sur - Crazy or lucky?

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

BIG SUR - Monterey to Pismo Beach - April 2020

We were going a bit crazy under quarantine (house arrest??) and needed an escape. So it was off to Pismo Beach for Max!! It was a 50/50 bet that our first stop would be open with all of the quarantine shutdowns, but off to Monterey we went. And it was closed! So our option was head back to the 101 or drive the Big Sur highway. Our truck GPS kept saying "Noooooo!" but how could we not drive what is arguably the most beautiful 100 mile stretch of road in the US?

So far, I haven't seen anything that is more spectacular, but as Cheryl said: thank God the road was deserted.

There was nothing particularly hard or dangerous about the drive (other than hairpin turns with 200+ foot shear drops), but there is no way to maintain the speed limit in a big rig and there are probably 10-20 turns at our length that made it impossible to not use both lanes. In normal traffic, it would have been stressful holding up traffic, but we picked the best possible day and had an amazing drive.

Would I do it again or recommend it to others? Doubtful. It's really not a hard drive, but I hate holding up other cars and there is just no way to avoid it in normal traffic on this route.
